Don’t Put Off Your Plans - Push The “Go” Button Today!
By Harriet Meyerson
We live in a perfectionist society. People seem eager to point out
every little thing that is wrong. Since no one likes to be criticized,
fear of not being perfect can make progress very slow, or it can prevent
people from even getting started.
For most of my life I tried to make sure the results would be perfect
before I started a project. When I started skiing, I read, reread,
underlined, and studied all the books on how to ski to make certain I was
doing it exactly right. When I was learning to sail, I devoured the books
on sailing to make sure I knew exactly what to do for every possible
situation. Doing this took the fun out of activities that were supposed to
be fun. It was the same with anything new that I took on. This was
especially true in making business decisions, I had to be sure that I
would have a certain results, or I wouldn't even start. As a result I
didn't start many projects that might have been successful.
A WISE MAN’S MOTTO
Then I met a man at a National Speaker's Association convention who was
wearing a T-shirt with the words, "Implement Now - Perfect Later." After
speaking to the man, I realized that there was a lot of wisdom in those
words. His was a "learn as you go" system which eliminated the enormous
stress of perfectionism. "Yes, you need to have a plan," he said,
"however, you can act on it even though it isn't perfect." Here are some
of the benefits of starting right now:
LIFE IS AN EXPERIMENT
You won't know how wonderful your idea is until you put it into action.
There is power in just beginning, which creates momentum.
You don't have to worry about the results because you know you are in
the experimental stage, and you are going to use the results as a
guideline for constant improvement. This will also give you something to
say to those who criticize your work.
ACTION BUILDS CONFIDENCE
Just starting creates new ideas for improvement that would never come
if you were just thinking about starting. If you're always thinking about
starting, but never actually doing anything, you will not only be
disappointed in yourself, you won't have the opportunity to face the
challenges that build confidence. So take the advice on a wise man’s
T-shirt "Implement Now - Perfect Later," and begin today and fine tune as
you go along.
